Parasite Control Options for Cattle in Hawaii
نویسندگان
چکیده
Most cattle harbor internal parasites. Parasitic in fections cost the U.S. beef industry more than $3 billion in economic losses due to reduced weight gain and feed conversion and increased stress leading to in creased susceptibility to diseases. Parasite populations and levels of infection are influenced by environmental factors and the production and management systems. In Hawaii, the subtropical/tropical environment creates a habitat suitable for the proliferation of these “profit-rob bing” internal parasites. We conducted trials to evaluate new parasite con trol products and formulations. The trials were carried out at a stocker-to-finish operation located in a humid, lowland ecological zone. The major forage in the inten sive grazing management system is California grass (Brachiaria mutica). Trial 1. Evaluation of dewormer application methods

Diagnosis of liver fluke infection in cattle.
The Parasite Fasciola hepatica, the common liver fluke, is the most likely cause of liver fluke disease in domestic ruminants in the United States. The fluke life cycle requires a snail intermediate host to complete transmission to a new ruminant host. The parasite is most often found in Florida, along the Gulf Coast, in the Pacific Northwest, in portions of the Rocky Mountains, and Hawaii. Oth...

Bovine neosporosis caused by the apicomplexan protozoan parasite N. caninum, was initially recognized in 1989 and is now reported as a leading infectious cause of reproductive failure in dairy cattle in world wide. The aim of this study was to determine the seroprevalence of N. caninum infection in industrial dairy cattle of Hamedan province (west of Iran) by ELISA method. Blo...

Immunity to Theileria parva infection in cattle is often parasite stock specific. The antigenic diversity which is expressed at the schizont stage of the parasite together with a wild reservoir of the organism in buffalo has complicated the development of effective disease control by immunization. We have previously shown that about 70% of cattle inoculated with recombinant forms of p67, a spor...

Neospora caninum is a worldwide distributed pathogen which causes abortion in cattle leading to economic loss in the cattle industry. The aim of this study was to determine the seroprevalence of N. caninum antibodies in the native cattle slaughtered in various areas of Kurdistan province (western Iran) from September 2010 to September 2011. Serum samples from 368 cattle slaugh...
متن کاملPreliminary evaluation of the potential of the helminth parasite Rhabdias elegans as a biological control agent for invasive Puerto Rican coquís (Eleutherodactylus coqui) in Hawaii
In Hawaii, the extremely loud mating calls of invasive Puerto Rican coquís (Eleutherodactylus coqui Thomas) depress real estate values in infested areas and reduce tourist appeal, with significant economic repercussions. Measures required to prevent inter-island transport of frogs also result in substantial costs for the floriculture industry. Classical biological control has been used successf...
